Bone china really does contain bone - in fact, about half of the original raw material is cattle bone, which has been incinerated at over 1000 °C and then ground into an exceptionally fine powder before being mixed with clay and stone. It's the bone ash that gives bone china it's distinctive, gleaming whiteness.

As a result of this labour-intensive process, bone china is more expensive than some other porcelain, but it has qualities that make it worth paying that little extra.
